Antique Ivory Cigarette Holder with Serpentine Carving
This is an antique cigarette holder made from ivory, with a snake-like, serpentine pattern carved into the body. First popularized in the early 20th century before the advent of filtered cigarettes, the cigarette holder was designed with several purposes in mind: keeping tobacco flakes out of the smoker’s mouth, preventing the thin cigarette paper from tearing and sticking together, keeping nicotine stains off of the smoker’s fingers, cooling the smoke drawn from the cigarette, and putting the cigarette at a greater distance from the smoker’s face so as to prevent smoke from irritating their eyes. Cigarette holders were considered an iconic staple of women’s fashion, but were also used by many men as well. This cigarette holder measures at approximately 4 inches in length.
