Antique Scrimshawed Whalebone Page Turner – 1839
This is an antique scrimshawed page turner made from whalebone, engraved with the initials ‘S.A.O’ and the year 1839. First popularized in the 19th century, page turners are used to maneuver the pages of books, particularly when dealing with rare or delicate ones, in order to not expose the pages to the oil of fingertips. They can also be used when reading a newspaper in order to not smear ink on one’s hands. This page turner measures 7.75 inches long and approximately .75 inch wide at the widest point.
